Herbert Howland

Herbert Edsel Howland, 85, of South Portsmouth, KY went to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday December 27, 2015 at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 23, 1930 in Beechy, KY a son of the late Robert Earl Howland and Pearl Nunley Howland. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Wanda Howell Howland; two brothers, Denver and Cletus and sisters, Arlene, Julia, Thelma and Eleanor. Herbert retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railway after 33 years of service. He was an engineer and always had a story to tell about his years working. He loved his country and was proud to say he was a United States Army Veteran. He was a Christian and a member of the First Christian Church of South Shore where he loved to praise his lord by singing and playing his guitar. Herb and his wife Wanda loved farming and raising a garden, they worked tirelessly side by side for many years on their farm and loved every minute of it. His greatest joy came from being with his family, he loved his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Herb is survived by his daughter, Deanna Howland Dowdy and her husband Stephen Dowdy Sr. of South Portsmouth, KY. His granddaughter Stephanie Dowdy Fritz of Raceland, KY. and grandson Stephen Dowdy Jr. and his wife Stacy of South Shore, KY. Great-grandchildren; Taylor Fritz, Chase Fritz, Tate Dowdy, Emma Kate Dowdy and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Wednesday December 30, 2015 at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore, KY with Brett Unger officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in South Shore with military graveside rites. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions are requested to the First Christian Church, P.O. Box 785, South Shore, KY 41175.
