Mattie Newberry Obituary

Mattie Jane (Montgomery) Newberry, 86, passed away on February 25, 2025. She was born August 22, 1938, in Greenup County, KY.   Mattie lived in South Shore, Ky until 2020 and in Ashville, Ohio, since then.  She was a wonderful mother and grandmother with much love and many talents.  She was exceptionally talented as a seamstress, quilter, cook, and baker. She was known as the “baby whisperer” in the family because babies and children loved her immediately and always.  She loved God and her church, family gatherings, and playing euchre.  She was the strength and glue of her family for many years and several generations.   

Mattie is preceded in death by her husband, James L. Newberry, and four children: Randall D. Newberry, Richard L. Newberry, Eric Scott Newberry, and Anita J. Newberry McCalvin, and one grandson, Clifford J. Stone.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, Ethel M. (Kibbey) and Lawrence M. Montgomery, her brothers, Alva Sutton, Virgil "Bud" Montgomery, Albin "Tom" Montgomery, James “George” Montgomery, Hal Montgomery and Owen R. Montgomery (Vietnam) and her sister, Maxine Potter.

She is survived by her son, James Bryant (Connie) Newberry and her daughter, Iris A. (Chris) Arnold, 10 grandchildren: Sarah Whisman, Stephanie Bentley, Stacy Cherry, Jessica Stone, Cody Newberry, Kelsey Nance, Caleb Newberry, Tyler Stone, Mattie Nance, and Samantha Crawford, and 10 great grandchildren: Micah Brown, Maggie Brown, Dexter Whisman, Mason Thompson, Aubree Thompson, Asher Newberry, Moxie Newberry, Eli Crawford, Isla Crawford and E.J. Cherry.

She is also survived by 6 siblings: Judy (Jay) Markins, Bill (Ramona) Montgomery, Eula (Dave) Durbin, Watts (Mary Jane) Montgomery, Bob (Linda) Montgomery, Brenda (John) Darnell, and many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral Service will be at 2 P.M. on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Morton-Hunt Family Funeral Home in South Shore, KY., with Gary Howell officiating. Burial will follow at Siloam Cemetery in South Shore, KY. Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday at the funeral home from 12 P.M. until the funeral hour.
