Roger Vanover Obituary

Roger Lee Vanover, 79, of South Shore, KY., passed away peacefully on March 24, 2024 surrounded by loved ones at U.K. Health Care Center in Lexington, KY. He was born in Greenup, KY., March 29, 1944 a son of the late Dawson and Juanita Stewart Vanover.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Gary Vanover.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Sue Thompson Vanover, and by his four children, Barry (Glenna) Vanover, Jennifer (Keith) Lute, Deron (Rachel) Vanover, and Brad (Amy) Vanover, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and three siblings: Jo (Terry) Cain, Barbara (Joseph) Haynes and Anita (Ed) Holsenbeck.

Roger was so much to so many.  He grew up in Lynn, Kentucky, where he learned to drive a stick in his dad’s 1940’s Willy’s Jeep, take care of his little brother and sisters, and help his dad at his garage. At McKell High School, he was a stand-out athlete playing baseball, basketball and football.  On December 21, 1962, he married his sweetheart and partner for life, Connie, and became an amazing husband.  Together they built a family and home full of care and love.  As a father, he was always there.  Roger was a dedicated and hard worker serving 39 years at the Brickyard and as a member of USW Local 133.  Even after retiring, he continued working as an accounting and payroll specialist at Denny’s Auto Sales. Even while working long hours every day, he found the time to not only teach his children how to be great people, he also gave himself to other’s children and friends as a coach on many sports teams.  So many in South Shore and Greenup know Roger as a coach to them and still appreciate everything he ever taught them.  Later he became “Papaw”.  Papaw can be seen in many birthday and celebration photos, always there, always smiling.
