Roy Bentley

Elmer "Roy" Bentley, 95, of South Shore, KY passed away Tuesday January 15, 2019 at South Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Roy was born March 28, 1923 in Firebrick, KY, a son of the late William S. Bentley and Laura B. Bentley. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and UK Basketball. Roy had a true wit and enjoyed children.
Roy was a member of the First Baptist Church in South Shore, the Harrison-Fullerton Masonic Lodge #937 in South Shore, and was retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad.
Two of his many accomplishments include being All-State in football at Mckell High School in 1941 and All-State FFA (Future Farmers of America).
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Bentley; three brothers, Wesley Bentley, John V. Bentley and Paul "Bud" Bentley; four sisters, Ollie Ratliff, Beulah Collier, Ota Hunt, and Etta Mae Bentley.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, Avanell Hunt Bentley. They were married October 31, 1942. Also surviving are his children, William "Bill" J. Bentley and his wife Linda Bentley of South Shore and Danny R. Bentley and his wife Cheri Bentley of Russell, KY; four grandchildren, Kimberly Wolfenbarker and Kathi Veach of South Shore, Erin Ramey of Okinawa, Japan and Mica Bentley of Culloden, WV; nine great grandchildren, Trent Wolfenbarker, Tyler Wolfenbarker, Kaylee Cornette, Emmerson Veach, RJ Veach and Danica Veach all of South Shore, Anthony Ramey , William H Ramey and Jackson Ramey of Okinawa, Japan; and five great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings, Howard Bentley of Columbus, OH, Robert "Bob" Bentley of South Shore, Wanda Dillow of South Shore and Betty VanHorn of Indianapolis, IN. Along with many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday January 18, 2019 at MORTON FUNERAL HOME in South Shore, KY with Darrell Stephenson and Charles Mallory officiating. Burial will follow at Siloam Cemetery in South Shore. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 pm and Friday from 11 am to 1pm.
